Transit union disputes deficit

Saskatoon city council endorsed changes to city workers' pension plan on Monday to address the deficit that helped spark a transit lockout, despite union claims that the fund could instead boast a surplus.
Councillors voted unanimously at a 90-minute emergency meeting to introduce mandatory increases to contributions of 0.30 per cent for all city employees over the next three years to address a $6.9-million deficit identified in a 2012 analysis of the pension fund.
The hike in contributions has been agreed to by the eight other unions in the plan, but remains a sticking point in attempts to reach a deal with Amalgamated Transit Union Local 615. The city locked out transit workers Saturday night, halting all bus services except Access Transit.
"This (pension deficit) does not exist," union president Jim Yakubowski told a packed city council chambers. "The citizens of Saskatoon do not deserve this."
